Aim: The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of 12-week soccer training on some anthropometric traits, body image perception and level of dissatisfaction. Methods: A total of 60 Italian pre-adolescent boys (aged 9-10 years) participated in this study. Each subject replied to a questionnaire and underwent an anthropometric survey before and after the training period. Body image perception and body dissatisfaction were evaluated through the Feel Minus Ideal Discrepancy Index while body incongruity was measured by the Feel weight status minus Actual weight status Inconsistency Index. Results: The 10-year-old soccer players showed greater anthropometric changes and a significant improvement in body image dissatisfaction after the 12-week training period than the 9-year-olds. In anthropometry the main effects were a significant decrease in sum of skinfolds and arm fat index , and an increase in fat free mass; in body image perception a significant decrease in Feel Minus Ideal Discrepancy Index. Conclusion: This study clearly demonstrates that regular soccer playing has a role in enhancing self-esteem and in improving body composition of pre-adolescent children.
