Photolysis of tetracyanoethylene in the presence of (η-C5H5)2M (M = Ru, Os) gives the novel (η-C5H5)2M · TCNE complexes. Charge transfer absorptions are identified for these compounds. Selective irradiation of the complexes gives metallocenium cations and TCNE⨪ anion radicals as the primary photoproducts.
