We examined 169 patients (198 eyes) who underwent trabeculectomy between 1987 and the end of June of 1993 at the University Eye Clinic in Ferrara (minimum follow-up: six months) suffering from chronic open-angle, chronic angle-closure and acute glaucomas. The authors consider the results for each type of glaucoma during a three-year follow-up; based on the controlled cases with and without additional medication and based on uncontrolled cases; through the short-and long-term complications and their effect on the pressure compensation; through the post-surgery pressure levels, studying the relationship between age and post-operative outcome. The efficacy of trabeculectomy is confirmed in this study: the intraocular pressure is normalized (<21 mmHg) in 90.4% of cases. In general the complications (39.9%) did not affect the post-operative results. The better results are observed in patients over 60 years old with open-angle glaucoma.
