The investigation was conducted to clarify the epidemiology of Parkinson's disease in the province of Sassari, North Sardinia. The prevalence rate on October 24th 1971, was 77.9 per 100,000 inhabitants. During the years 1961-1971, the average annual incidence was found to be 5.9 per 100,000 inhabitants. No significant difference was found between female and male rates. The age-specific prevalence rates showed a rapid increase after the 50th year of age. The highest prevalence was reached between 70 and 79 years. Parkinson's disease began on average at 56.9 years and its duration on prevalence day (October 24th, 1971) was found to be 6.5 years.
