To determinate the effect and the tolerability of intravenous omeprazole in the prevention of stress induced gastroduodenal lesions after elective major surgery, a randomized study with 28 patients has been carried out. The group A (14 cases) received 40 mg i.m. omeprazole daily from the day before surgery until oral administration was possible, there after omeprazole 20 mg tablets were delivered for other 7 days. The group B (14 cases) received 150 mg i.v. ranitidine daily and ranitidine 300 mg tablets according to the same protocol. No patients developed clinical findings of stress ulcer and no side effects were noted.
