Using a specific serum to BK virus (BKV) structural antigens in an indirect immunofluorescence test, positive staining was detected in renal glomeruli of patients with lupus nephropathy (NP), membranous glomerulonephritis (GN), IgA NP, Schonlein-Henoch GN, membranoproliferative GN, exudative GN and focal sclerosing GN. Only specimens positive for anti-human immunoglobulins (Igs), either IgG, IgA or IgM, showed fluorescence when reacting with anti-BKV serum, suggesting that BKV antigens were present in renal gomeruli as immune complexes with human Igs. Adsorption of anti-BKV serum with human Igs and control immunofluorescence tests using human Igs as antigens showed that fluorescence obtained in kidney specimes by staining with anti-BKV serum was a cross-reaction between BKV structural antigens and human Igs.
