Graves' disease, which occurs most often in women, can be complicated by pregnancy. Severe hyperthyroidism in pregnancy must be treated pharmacologically to ensure the safety of the mother and child. Both propylthiouracil and methimazole have been used successfully to treat thyrotoxicosis in pregnant women.

Abstract
