The study of the seafloor between Ancona and San Benedetto del Tronto, which is 90 km long, is based upon 162 samples collected at depths down to 12 m below sea level. It was established that the predominant directions of sediment transport are towards the north, and the presence of important fluvial supplies was excluded. The areal distribution of the textural parameters (percentage mud, standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis) shows unusual relative minima between 5 and 9 m. This pattern can be explained by the occurrence of residual sediments at these depths. This type of seafloor is characterized by sediments with low mobility which are impoverished of their finer fractions through wave action and which receive limited terrigenous contributions. The band of these sediments widens where there are no river mouths, and thins where the latter occur.
