In this paper we study the vertical propagation of stationary Rossby waves in the troposphere. We compute the refraction index of the troposphere using the quasi-geostrophic approximation. We find that the approximation used by many authors in the stratosphere cannot be extended in the troposphere. Our results show a refraction index totally independent of horizontal wave numbers that becomes imaginary close to the tropopause.
