Sera from 50 patients who fulfilled the revised CDC diagnostic criteria for AIDS were tested for the following autoantibodies: antinuclear antibodies (ANA), anti-double-stranded DNA antibodies (a-dsDNA), mitochondrial antibodies (AMA), smooth-muscle antibodies (SMA), gastric parietal cell antibodies (PCA), rheumatoid factors (RF), and anticardiolipin antibodies (ACA). An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was employed for the detection of IgG-ACA. Sera giving an optical absorbance of 5 standard deviations above the mean normal control values of 70 healthy blood donors were considered as positive for IgG-ACA. Among the AIDS patients, the frequency of ANA, a-dsDNA, AMA, PCA, and RF did not statistically differ from that found in the control groups, SMA were found in 6 patients (12.0 per cent) and in 4 controls (6.1 per cent). Abstract

Twenty-one out of the 50 AIDS patients (42.0 per cent) had IgG-ACA, as compared to 0 per cent found among the 70 healthy blood donors and to 21.5 per cent found amon...
