In this paper the authors analyze in a retrospective way their experience in the surgical treatment of rectal cancer underlining the results in the short and medium term. Between 1981 and 1990 we treated surgically 210 patients affected by rectal cancer: we performed 125 AR (60%), 49 AAP (23.3%), 23 Hartmann's intervention (11%), 1 subtotal colectomy (0.5%), 3 local excisions (1.3%), 6 excluding colostomy (2.6%), 3 explorative laparotomy (1.3%). In 36 AR we have performed also a protection colostomy (28.8%). In the first 30 days after the operation 4 patients (1.9%) died: 2 of them for cardiovascular insufficiency. About the other complications, the most significant were 8 clinical dehiscence (6.4%): of these 4 after high AR. Only 2 of the 8 dehiscences required reintervention; the other 6 cases they were resolved by functional rest of the intestine and NPT. The remaining complications were 5 anastomotic stenosis (4%), 1 hemorrhage (0.5%), 3 infections of the surgical wound (2.3%), 2 p...
