Is it possible to activate processes of architectural, economic, social, and touristic enhancement of cities by improving the environmental quality of their outdoor and semi-outdoor spaces? Thanks to the complementary relationship between the "open spaces," "buildings," and the city as a whole, actions taken on one element can significantly impact the others as well. However, when dealing with historical contexts, the analysis of outdoor spaces should incorporate not only environmental factors but also touristic, psychological, and conservation parameters to provide an adequate, multi-faceted methodology for the enhancement of historic cities.
