We greatly valued the importance of the article by Kozak et al,1 in which the authors used processed human retina samples to assay for RNA for inflammatory mediators in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus. As regards the processing of the fresh autopsy eyes, the authors claimed that enucleation occurred within 24 hours after death and the bulbs were immediately placed in RNA-later solution.
