The CASA CARE project (Casa Abilitante per lo Sviluppo dell’Autonomia a Calderara di Reno) aims to enhance the temporary co-housing service of the Municipality of Calderara di Reno through the development of innovative, inclusive, flexible, customizable, scalable, and transferable housing and technological solutions. The project is part of broader empowerment initiatives designed to foster full domestic autonomy among individuals with mild motor or cognitive disabilities. The combination of solutions tested within the assisted residence is intended to be replicated in the users’ future homes. The project adopts a co-design approach, engaging social and healthcare professionals, users, caregivers, and local companies in participatory workshops. Moreover, the use of Human-Centered Design methodologies has made it possible to gain an in-depth understanding of users’ needs and to precisely outline the current situation. This approach seeks to ensure that systems are both usable and useful by focusing on users, their needs, and their limitations, while emphasizing aspects of technology, ergonomics, and usability. The project involves outfitting the residence’s environments in accordance with the requirements of young users who need to learn how to live independently, within the framework of the “after us” paradigm. The spaces will be equipped with both physical and digital devices and supports, designed to be flexible and adaptable to the specific needs of the residents at any given time. This approach guarantees an adaptive and personalized environment that promotes autonomy and the wellbeing of the individuals involved. CASA CARE is situated within the context of plural design communities, serving as a model of inclusive and participatory design that respects cultural diversity and seeks to generate positive social impact on a broader scale. Through collaboration, sharing, and openness, these communities develop solutions that respond to the needs of a complex and diverse world, while promoting ethical and sustainable design practices. In conclusion, CASA CARE represents a significant example of how co-design and Human-Centered Design principles can be applied to develop innovative and adaptive housing solutions that foster autonomy and enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities. The project provides a replicable model that can be adopted in other contexts to address similar challenges, contributing to the advancement of positive care practices, social innovation, and inclusive design.
