We start from the observation that, on a global level, a process of “rooting” of precarious settlements in the metropolises is underway, which are structured on themselves, remain, and are sedimented in the collective imagination, producing an unprecedented sociocultural mutation; the physical structure of precarious settlements assumes stabilization and reorganization logics. In light of this phenomenon, the work proposes to rigorously systematize, through an unprecedented methodology, the reading of the urban form of a specific type of precarious settlement, the favela. The idea of the project is to use the analytical methodology, developed and tested in favelas in Rio de Janeiro and documented in the book Informal Rooting (Tessari, 2020), applying it in the Paraisópolis favela, in São Paulo. The study of Paraisópolis is able to provide a wide range of useful data for the development of the work, due to its extension, complex evolution, and articulated urban structure. The analysis is carried out from the perspective of urban morphology, a method not yet explored with sufficient rigor and precision by the scientific literature, thus highlighting the urban and architectural dimensions, reinforcing the importance of project action and design for the understanding of the territory, overcoming the barrier represented by hyper- complexity, marginality and difficulty of access.
