The story of the Braga Market tells how a heritage building (Souto de Moura was already an internationally recognised designer at his second commission in 1997) can be transformed with ease and without any reverence; an attitude that in many cities has led to the immobility of urban changes. The Market is now an archaeological promenade: a garden of fragments articulated by granite walls and pilotis of the old hypostyle hall which, freed from the weight of the roof, appear as sculptures of Giuseppe Uncini in dialogue with the new volumes of the Schools of dance and music.

Abstract

At the end of the 1990s, the Braga administration entrusted the future Pritzker Prize winner Eduardo Souto de Moura with the reconfiguration of the Municipal Market, which the same architect had designed thirteen years earlier. The case of the Braga Market, which had fallen into disuse as a commercial venue, is a unique example of the dialogue between selective preservation and re-signification of the existing. Indeed, Souto de Moura’s hand has succeeded in transforming the abandoned building into a contemporary ruin in which the fragments of the old artefact have taken on a new figurative-spatial value in relation to the renewed functional programme.
