In his last paper, Felice Casorati proposed an extrinsic measure of curvature of a surface that vanishes only on planes. His proposal triggered strong reactions in the mathematical community that we examine here, also by use of unpublished material. As Vincensini [1972] pointed out, Casorati’s proposal did not find stable citizenship in the mathematical literature: however, in the past decades a surge of interest in his measure of curvature occurred that justifies a historical analysis of his work.

Abstract

In his last paper, Felice Casorati proposed an extrinsic measure of curvature of a surface that vanishes only on planes. His proposal triggered strong reactions in the mathematical community that we examine here, also by use of unpublished material. As Vincensini [1972] pointed out, Casorati’s proposal did not find stable citizenship in the mathematical literature: however, in the past decades a surge of interest in his measure of curvature occurred that justifies a historical analysis of his work.
