Orbital decompression surgery usually reverses DON, but it may be followed by a progressive orbitopathy that reduces the amount of expanded orbital volume, with recurrent optic nerve compression. In our series, only one patient had recurrent DON 11 months following prior orbital decompression combined with muscle surgery, and was successfully treated with systemic glucocorticoids with no further relapse.
