From November 1888 to August 1889 the Italian mathematician Ernesto Pascal (1865-1940) was in Göttingen to improve his studies. He was recommended by Eugenio Beltrami, who at that time was Professor at the University of Pavia. In Göttingen Pascal could meet and study with Hermann Amandus Schwarz and, most of all, Felix Klein, who contributed to orient Pascal’s research towards Sigma abelian functions. The first results of these researches appeared in two articles published in 1889 in «Nachrichten von der K. Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften und der Georg-Augusts-Universität»: Zur Theorie der ungeraden Abel’schen Sigmafunctionen (pp. 416-423); Zur Theorie der geraden sigma-Funktionen (pp. 547-553). Soon after his return to Italy, Pascal was appointed “Extraordinary Professor” (1890-95) and then “Full Professor” (1895-1907) at the University of Pavia. As of 1889, Pascal was in correspondence with Klein. The letters he sent to the German mathematician are preserved in Kline’s archive in Göttingen. In my talk I will give an overview of the content of these letters in order to reconstruct the development of Pascal’s research following suit Klein. Another topic that I’d like to point out is the influence of German mathematical tradition inside the editorial project developed by Pascal of the “Repertorio di Matematiche superiori”. This collective work was published for the first time in Italy between 1898 and 1900, while the first German edition dated back to 1900-1902.
