Our current reconstruction of Mesolithic settlement in the Romagna Apennines is still limited. However, the recent discovery and excavation of an open-air site near Lake Ridracoli in the National Park of Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona and Campigna has provided new insights into early Holocene settlement in this area. The study of the lithic industry found at the site has revealed the existence of different frequentations likely ranged between the Sauveterrian and early Neolithic, but the disturbance of the original record complicates the interpretation of the site’s chronology and environmental conditions. Nonetheless, the Comignolo site represents a significant source of knowledge about a relatively unknown period in the Romagna region, shedding light on the settlement patterns of the last hunter-gatherers and the first farmers in the area.
