Taipei, capital city of Taiwan, rises up at the far north end of the island on the right bank of the river Tamsui, in the middle of the basin of Taipei. It is the commercial, governmental and cultural centre of the island with a population of 2,65 million inhabitants and a density of 9.781,51 inhabitants/km2. The Tamsui river played a prominent role in the economic, social, cultural and urban growth of Taipei. Taiwan is located along the main route of the typhoons coming from the Paci!c Ocean; it is subject to heavy rains and to a high number of rainy days with rainfall that are 2.6 times the world average (Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau).
