The article explores the problems related to the translation of language variation and especially feigned orality in comic books. After some considerations on the phenomenon of the variation and „feigned“ or „fictive“ orality as a translation problem, the study focuses on selected extracts of comic books contained in the book series Captain Underpants and on their Croatian, German and Italian translation. The central question is how some (morpho)phonetic, morphosyntactic, typographical and orthography elements marking orality and language variation / stratification are treated in texts in different target languages.

Abstract

The article explores the problems related to the translation of language variation and especially feigned orality in comic books. After some considerations on the phenomenon of the variation and „feigned“ or „fictive“ orality as a translation problem, the study focuses on selected extracts of comic books contained in the book series Captain Underpants and on their Croatian, German and Italian translation. The central question is how some (morpho)phonetic, morphosyntactic, typographical and orthography elements marking orality and language variation / stratification are treated in texts in different target languages.
