The article aims to identify and analyse some relevant morphosyntactic, lexical-semantic and functional aspects of the nominal number category from a contrastive, language-didactic and translation-didactic perspective. After an analysis of the general mechanisms, features and peculiarities of the number category in German (Numerus) as well as of the lexicographical and grammatical treatment of the category, an attempt is made to identify and systematise the problem constellations relevant to the language pair Italian-German which can induce negative transfer. Against this background, the question of how to sensitise foreign language didactics and translation didactics to the problem constellations outlined above is addressed.
