An autographic notebook of Carlo Stuparich has been found in the archives of Writers and Regional Culture in the Department of Humanities of Trieste University. Thanks to correspondence with his brother Giani it is noted that the text contained in this manuscript is the draft of a speech about Carlo’s experience of war. However the text has remained incomplete, and has probably never been narrated in public. The document represents the last writings of the young Carlo Stuparich, who departed for war as a volunteer irredentist and died prematurely in action on Mount Cengio. In the essay the intertextual references with Giani’s better known War of ’15 are examined, to which notes Carlo started to add his own impressions. The text is presented in a critical edition, accompanied by an apparatus of variants and a historical, geographical and linguistic comments. The retrieval of this autographical text of the younger Stuparich gives extra understanding not only to his work, but also to the number of writings left by the generation of Triestinos who were protagonists of the Great War. Although incomplete, the transcript clearly shows enthusiasm and suffering, disillusionment and irony, thanks to the quick style and personal characteristics of Stuparich.
