In this paper, I analyse the relation between religion and moral philosophy in Johann Gottlieb Fichte’s Attempt at a Critique of All Revelation (1792/1793). In order to do this, I deal with the concept of moral obligation. In doing so, I will shed light on both the pure rational and the sensible, eudemonistic aspects of moral obligation. I will argue that the importance of moral obligation in Fichte’s Attempt at a Critique of All Revelation can be properly understood only in the context of his theo-teleological explanation of the sensuous world.

Abstract

In this paper, I analyse the relation between religion and moral philosophy in Johann Gottlieb Fichte’s Attempt at a Critique of All Revelation (1792/1793). In order to do this, I deal with the concept of moral obligation. In doing so, I will shed light on both the pure rational and the sensible, eudemonistic aspects of moral obligation. I will argue that the importance of moral obligation in Fichte’s Attempt at a Critique of All Revelation can be properly understood only in the context of his theo-teleological explanation of the sensuous world.
