The Longue Durée. The Making of Biennale Donna in Italy

A detailed history and analysis of the foundation, growth and development of the Biennale Donna in Italy - one of the very few international biennales dedicated to women artists. The situation of the Biennale is explored in three phases of development 1984-1994, 1996-2006 and post-2008. The conditions and organisation politics of the running and curating an international biennale of contemporary art are explored in relation to the rediscovery of women artists; the expansion of an international programme; and the engagement with globalisation in the art market. The unique development of this Biennale is considered in relation to the involvement and activities of the women in the organising committee.
