Purpose: Prostaglandin analogues are widely used to induce abortion in the second trimester of pregnancy. We evaluated clinical outcome and complications in women undergoing medical termination of pregnancy with gemeprost. Methods: During a 4-year period 271 women had induction of abortion. All women were given 1 mg gemeprost vaginally every 3 hours up to a maximum of three doses in the first 24 hours. If abortion did not occur within the first 24 hours, patients were given a second course of gemeprost. Outcome measures included failure of the first course of gemeprost, length of hospital stay after expulsion of the conceptus, severe blood loss with or without necessity of uterine packing or blood transfusion, and failure of induction. Results: Women with a previous vaginal or abdominal delivery were more likely to abort after the first course of gemeprost than primiparae (P < 0.01).
