Prevention and treatment of congenital toxoplasmosis are still a matter of debate and there is no consensus about antenatal screening and diagnostic tests. The management of this infection during pregnancy requires a multidisciplinary approach. Nowadays, there is a need for accurate diagnostic tests and national epidemiologic data on this infection in order to establish a proper and cost-effective protocol for its diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. We report our experience of a regional model set up using a multidisciplinary approach for the prenatal diagnosis of congenital toxoplasmosis. The model was designed on the basis of the National Guidelines of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS).

Abstract

Prevention and treatment of congenital toxoplasmosis are still a matter of debate and there is no consensus about antenatal screening and diagnostic tests. The management of this infection during pregnancy requires a multidisciplinary approach. Nowadays, there is a need for accurate diagnostic tests and national epidemiologic data on this infection in order to establish a proper and cost-effective protocol for its diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. We report our experience of a regional model set up using a multidisciplinary approach for the prenatal diagnosis of congenital toxoplasmosis. The model was designed on the basis of the National Guidelines of the Istituto Superiore di Sanita (ISS).
