The present study was carried out in order to evaluate the usefulness of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) obtained by transcranial magnetic stimulation, in anticipating medullary functional recovery after surgical treatment of spine stabilization. MEPs were studied in 14 patients with traumatic dorsal spinal cord injuries and in 11 patients with neoplastic lesions surgically treated. Electrophysiological data were compared using a functional scale that allows quantification of neurological impairment. MEPs was useful only in predicting clinical recovery in subjects with compressive neoplastic lesions. MEPs performed in traumatic injuries did not contribute any further information to that derived from the clinical examination with the functional scale.

Abstract
The present study was carried out in order to evaluate the usefulness of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) obtained by transcranial magnetic stimulation, in anticipating medullary functional recovery after surgical treatment of spine stabilization. MEPs were studied in 14 patients with traumatic dorsal spinal cord injuries and in 11 patients with neoplastic lesions surgically treated. Electrophysiological data were compared using a functional scale that allows quantification of neurological impairment. MEPs was useful only in predicting clinical recovery in subjects with compressive neoplastic lesions. MEPs performed in traumatic injuries did not contribute any further information to that derived from the clinical examination with the functional scale.I documenti in SFERA sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
