Introduction. Data from epidemiological studies on multiple sclerosis (MS) have suggested the role of environmental factors in the etiology of the disease in genetically prone subjects. In this work we investigated environmental risk factors in two European populations: Moskow's people, in Russia, and Ferrara's people, in Italy. Methods. We used a case-control approach. Patients with clinically definite MS and controls were matched for sex, age, ethnic group and birthplace. Relative risk was estimated for each variable through calculation of the odds ratio. The 95% confidence intervals were also calculated. Differences were considered significant at the conventional 0.05 level. Results. In both populations we found a significant correlation between MS and chronic exposure to chemicals.
