The presence of Oligoclonal Bands (OB) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) showed by Isoelectricfocusing (IEF) indicates an intrathecal synthesis of IgG and therefore we can consider it as a 'Gold Standard'. In the present study, we compared the IgG Index, The Schuller, Tourtellotte, Reiber, Ohman formulas and IgG CSF/Alb CSF Ratio with IEF to verify which of the above mentioned quantitative methods demonstrates better the presence of IgG intrathecal synthesis. We studied the CSF and serum samples of 206 patients affected by different neurological disorders (87 Multiple Sclerosis and 119 Other Neurological Disorders). We compared all the formulas, by means of Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) Curve, with the presence of CSF OB.
