TNF-a levels were determined in supernatants from cultured alveolar macrophages (AM) from bronchoalveolar lavage fluids (BAL) obtained from patients with AIDS and PCP, AIDS and AIDS related complex (ARC) without PCP but with P. carinii in their specimens (Group B); and asymptomatic HIV seropositive patients without demonstration of Pneumocystis (Group C), by using a sandwich ELISA. Increased TNF-a values were detected in supernatants from Groups A and B but not in asymptomatic HIV+ patients and in those with ARC. The increased TNF-a production from Group A was associated with lower P. carinii counts than those found in patients from Group B.
