An enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has been employed to detect soluble P. carinii antigen in sera from 18 AIDS patients with or without Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia parasitologically confirmed, 21 patients with other illness and 20 normal sera. These results have been compared with those obtained with counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIEP). ELISA has been shown more sensitive and specific than CIEP and capable to quantitate the circulating antigen also after beginning treatment.
