Three groups of subjects were studied by means of noninvasive diagnostic tracings. 50 patients, aged 43 to 94 yr, with an innocent aortic systolic murmur; 50 patients, aged 7 to 86 yr, with the systolic murmur of aortic stenosis; and 50 normal subjects (controls) aged 9 to 81 yr. The important differential criteria were listed in two groups: the phonocardiographic amplitude of the second sound and the characteristics of the murmur; and the various parameters of the arterial pulse. The differences between the various groups were statistically significant and were further confirmed by clinical and laboratory data.
