Perturbative corrections to Wilson loops are computed up to order g4 on lattices of several sizes. A renormalization group improvement of the perturbative expansions for χ(I, J) is discussed. An analysis is performed in which the perturbative background is subtracted from quantities measured in Monte Carlo simulations of SU(3) pure gauge theories, yielding a value Λ/√σ=0.0112+-0.0004, in good agreement with that obtained from measurements of correlation functions of Polyakov lines. © 1984.
