Abstract

Acne is an inflammatory disease of pilosebaceous units located on the face, chest and back. Significant psychosocial disabilities can arise as a consequence of the disease. Scarring represents a frequent outcome of acne as well and can lead to lifelong concern in regarding self-esteem. Treatment of acne depends on its severity and should target as many pathophysiologic factors as possible. In order to achieve a stable remission, physicians should be aware that acne is a chronic disease and not just a self-limiting disorder of teenagers. Acne lesions usually recur for years and tend to return soon after cessation of active treatment. As a consequence, a proper therapeutic management of acne should include a maintenance therapy to prevent the recurrence of the disease after discontinuing a successful treatment regimen. We evaluate the available acne treatment options and focus on alternative molecules.
