The Hermes recoil detector will consist of three main components : a silicon detector surrounding the target cell inside the beam vacuum, a scintillating fibre (SciFi) tracker in a longitudinal magnetic field of about 1 Tesla and a photon detector consisting of several scintillator layers. The photon detector uses an extra layer of lead, the cryostat and the return yoke of the magnet as shower material. The aim of the experiment is the investigation of the spin structure of the nucleon in electron scattering
