This paper analyses the relationship between university and the industrial system, with particular reference to the question of research valorisation to productive ends, both in the European and in the Italian context. The focus is specifically on firm creation out of reserch activities, the so-called spin-off cases. The article is divided in three parts: a) the relationship between university and firms in Italy; b) the creation of academic spin-offs; c) the Italian esperience and the case of the University of Ferrara.
