This aims to introduce the large EIASM Workshop on “Visualising, Measuring, and Managing Intangibles and Intellectual Capital” held at the University of Ferrara (18-20 October 2005) that has originated this special issue; the papers selected amongst those most representative and promising vis-à-vis future research avenues; and some of the fundamental issues that have emerged during the above event. In particular, the scientific identity and status as a discipline of the subject area called “intangibles and intellectual capital” is here questioned and critically examined.
