It is well-known that free radicals are involved in the carcinogenesis process. Selenium (Se) is an essential component of glutathione peroxidase and probably inhibits the carcinogenesis through a protective effect towards the oxidative damage, besides having an inhibitory effect on DNA synthesis and cellular proliferation. In addition, Se controls the expression of some oncogenes and modulates the activity of the immune system. Copper (Cu) and Zinc (Zn) are micro-elements, cofactors of the superoxide-dismutase, that protect cells from the activity of free radicals, besides playing a role in the cellular immunity. We evaluated the serum and hair concentrations of the 3 oligoelements in the study through 'quadrupolar mass spectrometer with a plasma source' (ICP-MS).
