In the present research, the authors studied the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients affected by Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS): 57 subjects, 37 males and 20 females, mean age 58.8 ± 16.9, range from 6 to 81 years. Patients were included according to the criteria of Asbury and Cornblath. In all, we analyzed CSF and serum for cyto-chemical, Albumin and IgG picture, followed by quantitative and qualitative determination of an intrathecal IgG synthesis and/or Blood-Brain-Barrier (BBB) damage. We found a BBB breakdown in 70.2%, an Albumin-cytologic dissociation in 47.4% and a positive Pandy in the 43.8%. The indexes, reflecting a quantitative intrathecal synthesis, are less important. Isoelectric focusing (IEF) and Immunoblotting (IB) show a BBB damage by a polyclonal picture in 50.9% of the patients. At the end-point, prognostic-laboratoristic findings showed a positive and statistically significant correlation with the polyclonal picture of IEF and IB (p < 0.01) and the BBB damage (p < ...
