An epidemiological survey on VZV infection has been performed in the Province of Lecce. We reviewed data on all cases notified in this area for the period 1970-1998; the sroprevalence analysis involved a significative sample of the population for the age classes 0-39 years. In Lecce varicella is endemic-epidemic and in th eperiod considered its trend is increasing. The serosurvey showed that varicella has the greatest impact among children; nonetheless, a relatively high percentage of young adults is still susceptible to VZV.
