Prevalence of diphtheria toxin antibodies was quantitatively evaluated by means of a microtiter ELISA on a representative sample of the Genoese population. A total of 849 sera were evaluated; 88.7% snowed a diphtheria antitoxin titre equal to or greater than 0.01 IU/ml. The rate of females with an antitoxin titre lower than 0.01 IU/ml was statistically different from that of males (13.5% vs 8.9%).
