This chapter provides a historical analysis of the discipline of industrial economics in Italy, from its start in the early 1970s. Beyond a review of issues of interest the role of specific institutions, such as the journal L'Industria, as well as of specific preminent scholars such as Alberto Beneduce and Pasquale Saraceno are examined. It shows that the strong character of the Italian school of industrial and economics policy remains the close relations between academic research and economic policy-making, with a strong focus on structural change and policy implementation.
