The article reviewes the role of melatonin in controlling the pattern of song in songbirds. Song and the song system are influenced by gonadal steroids. We found that the neural song system contains different subtypes of melatonin receptors. Melatonin can affect the pattern of song, probably by direct effects that bypass steroid-receptor actions.
