The aurignacian deposit in the Fumane Cave has been dug over 80 sqm, in front of the cave and in the entrance. On the basis of the sediments and the soils, faunas and radiometric datings, the end of the musterian occupation and the beginning of the aurignacian one can be traced back to the end of a temperate and damp climatic phase, which probably refers to the Hengelo pollen zone. The aurignacian occupation continues in the following cold and arid phase, concluding in a less cold phase, perhaps Arcy. Numerous radiometric datings establish an age of between 34.000 and 32.000 years BP for the first modern human occupation. From the structures and industries point of view, there is no continuity between the musterian and the aurignacian sequences. The workmanship of the bone, the ornamental objects and art are exclusive to the aurignacian layers. Some structures were found: a protected domestic zone suggested by four post-holes, some hearths, heaps of rejects and ochre concentrations. In order to determine the age of death and the season of capture, the preliminary analysis of sections of incremental growth of ibex and red deer's teeth structures show that the human occupation was seasonal and circumscribed to an inclusive period between the end of spring and the end of autumn.
