In this paper a procedure for planning leakage detection activities in water distribution systems is presented. With reference to a set time window, the proposed procedure makes it possible to define the optimal frequency for conducting leakage detection surveys so as to minimise the total cost given by the sum of the costs of leakage detection, of lost water and of the energy consumed by pumping stations. The procedure can be applied to plan leakage detection activities across an entire water distribution system of for individual sub-areas, thus enabling a targeted approach where intervention will be detetermined according to the specific conditions in each sector. Application of the procedure to a real water distribution system shows its potentialities.

Abstract
In this paper a procedure for planning leakage detection activities in water distribution systems is presented. With reference to a set time window, the proposed procedure makes it possible to define the optimal frequency for conducting leakage detection surveys so as to minimise the total cost given by the sum of the costs of leakage detection, of lost water and of the energy consumed by pumping stations. The procedure can be applied to plan leakage detection activities across an entire water distribution system of for individual sub-areas, thus enabling a targeted approach where intervention will be detetermined according to the specific conditions in each sector. Application of the procedure to a real water distribution system shows its potentialities.I documenti in SFERA sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
