In this work we have been investigated the potential of the new Earthwatch QuickBird high resolution satellite (launched on October 2001) for deriving coastlines and analyzing coastal changes. A coastline mapping project has been carried out on "Sacca di Goro" lagoon (Ferrara province - Emilia Romagna region - Italy): a very interesting lagoon limited from the sea by a system of sand-banks. The Province of Ferrara has been acquired a new Quickbird image (panchromatic and multispectral, February 2003) of the “Sacca di Goro”, and this image has been geometrically corrected with different non parametric models (polynomial and rational function models) within PCI OrthoEngine 8.2 software. Using corrected satellite imagery we have been obtained the shoreline (by manually interpretation).
