Edizione e studio del ms. Catastro B conservato all'Archivio di Stato di Modena

This study sets out to provide a thorough and systematic investigation of manuscript Catastro B, preserved in the State Archives of Modena: an overlooked “monument ” in the history of Ferrara and the Po Valley. The research aims to enhance the manuscript’s value from both a codicological-paleographic and a historical-archival perspective. The uniqueness of this research, which increasingly took shape as a true work of “excavation”, has been developed on several levels. First, a codicological and paleographical analysis was carried out in order to reconstruct the complex material structure of the codex, through the identification of loose files, notebooks and parchments, and by tracing the work of the notary-scribes involved. Subsequently, at the heart of the project, lies a critical and systematic edition of the mid-thirteenth-century collection of testimonies, achieved through the full transcription of all documents in their original sequence, accompanied by notes and a critical apparatus designed to foreground and restitute the manuscript itself as a historical source. Finally, the study offers diplomatic observations – viewed from a historical-archival angle – on the officials, librarians, and readers who engaged with these documents for institutional purposes, as well as on the aims that guided the magistracies in commissioning and assembling the book. This represents the final interpretive key to this multi-layered, interdisciplinary inquiry.

Il presente lavoro si è offerto come un’indagine approfondita e sistematica, mirata alla valorizzazione sia dal punto di vista codicologico-paleografico sia storico-archivistico, del ms. Catastro B conservato presso l’Archivio di Stato di Modena: “monumento ” trascurato della storia di Ferrara e dell’Italia padana. L’unicità di questa ricerca, che sempre più si è andata a delineare come un vero e proprio lavoro di “scavo”, è stata articolata e suddivisa su più livelli. In primo luogo, un’analisi codicologica e paleografica, volta a ricostruire la complessa struttura materiale del codice, attraverso il riconoscimento di fascicoli, quaderni e pergamene sciolte, e l’individuazione dell’attività dei notai copisti coinvolti. Successivamente, al cuore del progetto, si è andata a redigere un’edizione critica e sistematica della raccolta testimoniale medioduecentesca, attraverso la trascrizione integrale di tutti i documenti, rispettandone la successione, e corredandoli di note e apparato critico che prediligesse e restituisse il manoscritto in quanto fonte. In conclusione, sono state eseguite le osservazioni diplomatiche, in prospettiva storico–archivistica, degli elementi riconducibili a funzionari, bibliotecari e lettori che sono entrati in contatto con i documenti per ragioni d’ufficio e le finalità che guidarono le magistrature all’effettiva fabbricazione: l’ultima chiave di lettura di questa ricerca multilivellare e interdisciplinare.
