The intervention in Cairano, a small hilltop settlement in Campania affected by depopulation, was developed by Verderosa Studio and focused on the regeneration of the most abandoned area near the former castle. Supported by European funding, the project redefines existing dwellings for hospitality purposes through a non-invasive approach that preserves the original building fabric and local architectural language. The worksite constraints, including the absence of vehicular access, encouraged the reuse of on-site materials and the systematic application of CAM (Minimum Environmental Criteria), ensuring environmental sustainability. Structurally stable walls were consolidated, while degraded ones were rebuilt using salvaged elements and seismic retrofitting techniques. New wooden floors and roofs respect original forms, and recovered furnishings were restored and reinstalled. The project proposes a replicable model for the regeneration of marginal settlements, grounded in material reuse and contextual continuity.
